What makes The Experiment unique?

  • History and Experience. The Experiment has been running high quality summer abroad programs every summer since 1932. We are part of a global network of like-minded individuals, partner offices, and educational organizations creating the most authentic, safe, well supported programs in the field of international education for high school students.
  • Our Participants. We reach out to students, families, schools, and communities in every corner of The United States. Each Experiment group, typically 10-15 students, includes young people from small towns and large cities, public and private schools, and different races and socio-economic backgrounds. Students may come from the Navajo reservation, New York’s Westchester County, the Iowa plains, California’s Bay Area, and all points in between. Our students share experiences and find that the friendships they make and the support they receive throughout the program deeply enhance their experience.
  • Our Programs. Experiment programs are fun, thought-provoking, and active. Each Experiment program includes an in-depth cross-cultural orientation in the capital or major city of the country, a homestay, a program focus, and synthesis/evaluation at the end of the program.
  • Our Partnerships. We create authentic, meaningful, dynamic programs. Working collaboratively with experienced international partners, Experiment programs make the most of local resources, connect our students directly with in-country experts, and ensure health and safety.
  • Authentic Experiences. All Experiment programs are built and run in collaboration with experienced international partners. These partners ensure the safety and welfare of our participants and ensure culturally authentic experiences. During each Experiment program, our participants work closely with in-country experts every step of the way. Native language trainers, chefs, artists, ecologists, peace makers, host families, and guides play an active role and create the most meaningful, culturally authentic experiences possible.
  • Support Across Generations. With 77 years of experience, thousands of alumni families continue to support The Experiment. Their generosity contributes to our mission and their dedication creates a broad multi-generational network of individuals and families connected with The Experiment.
