The Experiment Difference

Thank you for your interest in The Experiment in International Living. Drawing upon 76 years of history and experience, we strive to create programs that inform and inspire.

We craft every Experiment program with purpose and focus. Grounded in the underlying philosophy that the most meaningful experience is born out of an intimate connection to the people and culture of another country, a summer with The Experiment is not simply a trip or a tour. Experimenters will be challenged to integrate into the daily life of a new culture as a member of a diverse group, host family, and active project-based experience.

We work with experienced international partner offices to create authentic, well-supported programs. These in-country experts help design programs that make the most of local resources and ensure the safety and welfare of our students. At our Experiment headquarters in Vermont, Experiment staff support you from the beginning of the application process through the completion of your program. We help answer your questions, prepare you for your journey, and are available throughout the summer should your family have any questions or concerns.

In many ways, the success of our programs depends upon you. Each year, we search for dynamic, motivated young men and women seeking a rich, meaningful experience. Bring an open mind, an open heart, curiosity, and a thirst to learn, and your Experiment will be greatly enriched.

We take great care in matching you with an Experiment group comprised of students from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences. Experimenters come from small towns and large cities, public and private schools, and different races, religions, sexual orientations, physical abilities, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Our groups, typically 8–15 students each, foster an atmosphere of understanding, acceptance, learning, and growth, and give our host families abroad—as well as Experimenters themselves—a feel for America’s culture and diversity. We hope and anticipate that you will learn as much about the United States as you do about the country you are visiting.

Your trained adult group leader supports you and your group throughout the entire program. We select engaging, responsible, knowledgeable Experiment leaders to facilitate your learning experience, encourage personal growth, and keep you safe.

We are honored that you are considering a summer with us. We recognize the courage it takes to make a decision to venture so far from home. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions. We sincerely hope you will join The Experiment family this summer.

Please note:
Fees, itineraries, sample host communities, and sample activities published in this Web site are based on our best information more than a year in advance. Since The Experiment is always looking to improve the quality and safety of programs and take advantage of new opportunities, this information may change.

"I saw my Experimenters develop a greater sense of themselves as individuals, Americans, and citizens of the world. Their self-confidence grew as they explored Paris and Avignon, established themselves within the group, and adjusted to life with their host families. The group itself became a family unit supportive of one another. They learned that they have the capacity to adapt to new situations and flourish within them. I saw them take a step forward in their lives, a step closer to the wonderful, bright, and talented adults they will become. They became more open-minded and more accepting of differences. These young people have great potential to succeed as productive and caring members of society, and I believe that this Experiment gave them all a glimpse of that potential."
