Application Checklist

The application process has two steps. The first is your application for admission to The Experiment, and the second is the submission of your confirmation materials.

In your online application for admission, you will be asked to complete an application form with personal information; short answers; an essay of between 300 and 500 words; and one letter of reference from a teacher, mentor, advisor, or coach.

Once you complete your application for admission, you will be asked to submit, via the online application portal, your confirmation materials, including:

  1. Conditions of Participation
(The PDF is also available in your online application after you have logged in and submitted your admissions materials.)

  2. Medical Form
The medical form needs to be printed, completed, and signed by you (the participant), a parent or guardian, and a physician no later than May 9. Part I, Authorization and Personal Health History, should be completed and signed by you and a parent/guardian, and all subsequent pages need to be completed by a physician and be based on a recent physical.

The Experiment requires all students to have up-to-date baseline immunizations. In Part II of your medical form, your physician should indicate the most recent date of our required immunizations. Check your Health Guidelines for other country-specific required and recommended immunizations.

  3. Passport Copy
Please scan and upload a copy of your passport into your online application.

    Alternately, you can:
    • Scan and email your passport copy to us at experiment@worldlearning.org.
    • Fax your passport copy to 802 258-3412
    • Mail your passport copy to:
      Attn: Application Materials
      The Experiment in International Living
PO Box 676, 1 Kipling Road
      Brattleboro, VT 05302 US

    Passport Guidelines:
    • Passport must be valid through February 2015. (Many countries require your passport be valid for at least six months or longer beyond the dates of your program.)
    • The copy we receive must include the first two pages — photo and signature page.
    • Be sure your passport is signed.
    • A special note to non-US citizens:
      1. You are responsible for making sure that your immigration documents are in order for international travel.
      2. These may include: a US alien registration card, a valid passport, a visa for the country(ies) you would be visiting, and a US reentry permit.
      3. Consult the US Immigration and Naturalization Service office in your area, and the embassy or consulate of the country you will visit as soon as possible. Some documents can take as long as three months to obtain.

  4. Passport Photos
Please mail two additional passport photos to:
    Attn: Application Materials
    The Experiment in International Living
PO Box 676, 1 Kipling Road
    Brattleboro, VT 05302 USA

Should you lose your passport, these two official passport photos will be used, along with the photocopy of your passport, to replace your official passport. They are in addition to those you will use when applying for your original passport and/or visa, if applicable.

    Photograph Guidelines:
    • Photographs should be 2x2 inches in size.
    • They should have been taken within the past 6 months and should show your current appearance.
    • Photographs should be in color.
    • Your full face (front view) should be visible in the photographs, and you should be in front of a plain white or off-white background.
    • Photographs should show your face in 1 inch to 1 3/8 inches of height, from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head.
    • You should be wearing normal street attire. Uniforms should not be worn in photographs. Religious attire that is worn daily may be worn in photographs.
    • Do not wear a hat or headgear that obscures the hair or hairline. If you normally wear prescription glasses, a hearing device, wig or similar articles, they should be worn for your picture.
    • Dark glasses or non-prescription glasses with tinted lenses are not acceptable unless you need them for medical reasons. A medical certificate may be required.

  5. Homestay Letter and Personal Photos
The homestay letter is an important first step in establishing a connection with your new host family, as it provides them with information about you. If there is a language requirement for your program, please write the letter in the language of your hosts. Your homestay letter and recent photograph will be given to your host family.

Begin your letter with “Dear Host Family,” thank them for accepting you into their home, and tell them about yourself. Describe your interests, your community, your family, or whatever you feel might give your hosts some background about you and ways to better engage with you when you arrive.

Please be sure to include a current casual photo of yourself with your family and/or friends.

When you are finished with your letter, there are two ways to submit it:
    1. Upload your saved Microsoft Word or PDF letter with personal photos inserted into the document into your online application for admission.
    2. Email your letter with inserted photos to experiment@worldlearning.org. Please use your full name in the title of the document and in the email subject line.

A Note to Parents/Guardians
After your child submits his or her online application, if your email address was entered, you will receive login credentials to The Experiment’s parent/guardian resource website, where you can view your child's application, update your contact information, download confirmation materials, and enter additional information about your child. To access the parent/guardian site, you or your child must enter a unique email address on your child's application.
