China
Huanying ni dao Zhongguo lai.
Magical, mysterious China—the sleeping giant closed to US visitors for years—has flung open its doors to reveal a society in the midst of incredible change. From the explosive growth of modern cities such as Shanghai and Beijing to rural ways of life seemingly unchanged for centuries, China is a fascinating study in contrasts. Practice your Mandarin language skills with local teachers and your Chinese group leader as you explore markets and enjoy banquet-style meals. You share your adventures with a group of Chinese students who travel with you to ancient cities and remote villages, helping you gain a more intimate understanding of China.
The Experiment offers two exciting programs in China. Both include an orientation in Beijing, short urban and rural homestays, and travel with Chinese students. An Experiment experience in China will challenge you to use and improve your Mandarin language skills and directly engage you in Chinese life and culture through fascinating regional exploration, travel, and hands-on activities and excursions.
"I will always remember the misty view from the top of the sacred Mt. Tai and the vivid blue sky on the steppes of Inner Mongolia. In China, I learned the subtle art of give and take involved in bargaining at the market, deftly balancing aggressiveness and playfulness. I played cards with a group of Chinese students on a sleeper train. I made dumplings with my host grandmother, who patiently taught my clumsy fingers how to form and fill the dough. I learned about China's ancient history, turbulent recent past, and got a glimpse of what the future may hold."
