Spain: Picasso, Dali and the Art of Catalonia
Orientation in Madrid
Your adventure begins with an action-packed, three-day orientation in Madrid. Put your Spanish to use as you order tapas in a local café, ask for directions to the Palacio Real, and explore the city’s medieval streets. Visits to incredible museums on the “museum mile,” discussions in city parks, and exploration of diverse neighborhoods strengthen your understanding of contemporary Spanish life and culture. Your orientation concludes with a full-day excursion to historic Toledo.
Picasso, Dali, and the Art of Catalonia
Dive into Spanish art and architecture during a busy orientation in Madrid. Join an art historian for a visit to some of Madrid’s most famous museums, practice your Spanish language skills, and learn about both classical and contemporary Spanish art. After your two-week homestay immersion with a Spanish family, travel to Barcelona and Catalonia to learn about the intimate connection between art and Catalan culture. For two weeks, you are joined by a Spanish painter and art historian who introduces you to the lives and works of Picasso, Dali, Miró, and Gaudi through painting workshops, visits to remote Catalan towns, and exploration of magnificent Barcelona.
Sample host communities: Olot, Valencia
Sample activities: Visit Madrid’s Prado museum; feast your eyes on the architectural wonders of Gaudi; sample the tasty regional foods of Catalonia; paint like Picasso during workshops with a Spanish painter; visit the Catalan towns of Gerone, Figueres, or Cadaqués.
