Brazil: Soccer and Service
Program Overview
Orientation in Rio de Janeiro
Jammed between rugged mountains and the warm waters of the Atlantic, Rio is a breathtaking city of culture, festivity, and spectacle. Spend three exhilarating days exploring the distinct and invigorating cultures of Rio's many neighborhoods, climbing the Corcovado to see the statue of Christ the Redeemer, and working on your Portuguese language skills by bargaining at local artisan markets.
Soccer and Service
Brazilians are passionate about football. Reflecting the vibrancy of their culture, soccer is played with a distinct flair and artistic elegance found nowhere else in the world. From the broad sandy beaches in Rio, to the inner-city cement playgrounds of São Paolo and dusty pitches in rural communities, the sport is everywhere. Experience Brazilian culture through "the beautiful game" during an unforgettable month in Brazil. Following orientation, journey to a renowned soccer school to practice your skills and work on your game. Playing with local youth will sharpen your technique, allow you to build friendships, and develop your Portuguese language skills. During the homestay, ease into the daily life of your Brazilian hosts and enjoy pick-up games with community members. Then give something back by working with a nonprofit that organizes after-school sports and cultural activities for young people. Your Brazilian soccer adventure comes to a close with a few days of rest and relaxation on the beach.
