  • Participate in drumming and dance workshops with Brazilian teens
  • Explore the markets of colonial Salvador
  • Witness the natural beauty of the Chapada Diamantina

Orientation in Rio de Janeiro
Jammed between rugged mountains and the warm waters of the Atlantic, Rio is a breathtaking city of culture, festivity, and spectacle. Spend three exhilarating days exploring the distinct and invigorating cultures of Rio’s many neighborhoods, climbing the Corcovado to see the statue of Christ the Redeemer, and working on your Portuguese language skills by bargaining at local artisan markets.

Dance, Music, and Capoeira in Bahia
Experience the vibrancy of African-Brazilian culture in Bahia through song, dance, capoeira, and theater. Following your orientation, spend two weeks in the colonial city of Salvador working with trained professionals at arts-focused nonprofit organizations. Using dance, interpretive theater, drumming, and storytelling through song, you will work side by side with local teens to create an inspiring
final performance focused on indigenous music and movement.

Sample activities: Use your Portuguese language skills to shop in open air bazaars; enjoy some time on beautiful beaches; feast on a variety of local delicacies at a churrascaria; explore Salvador’s quaint colonial streets with new friends; take in music and dance performances.

Homestay and Community Service
Enjoy Brazilian daily life by living with a welcoming host family for a week. Hone your Portuguese language skills through discussions with your new friends and family. Volunteer at a community development service project to give back to the community that has generously welcomed you.

Sample Activities: Learn the Brazilian folkloric Forro dance and practice the graceful capoeira, a Brazilian-Angolan martial art taught by the Corda Bamba Cultural Association; cook traditional Brazilian meals; paint and refurbish a community school.

Travel
Your great adventure culminates with a week of travel through the visually stunning countryside of  rural, tropical Bahia province.

Sample Activities: Visit caves, waterfalls, mountains, and valleys in the lush Chapada Diamantina; ride in an open air jeep over rolling sand dunes; hike remote nature trails.
