Italy: La Dolce Vita - Gelato, Food and Culture
La Dolce Vita – Gelato, Food, and Culture
For many, Italian gelato is the best ice-cream in the world. The bright colors and fresh ingredients found in gelato reflect the vibrancy of Italian culture and provide insight into the connection between food and regional differences in Italy. Spend a month immersed in Italian culture through its food and famous desserts.
Culinary Adventure and Homestay
After your Roman orientation, travel to Parma. Famous for its black truffles, Parma ham, parmigiano cheese and home to tortellini pasta, Parma is an important gastronomic center in Italy. Spend a week sampling regional delicacies, learning how food is made, and exploring nearby towns and cities. Then, travel to a town in Northern Italy to begin your two-week homestay with an Italian family. Spend your afternoons exploring the community with new friends and the evenings cooking fresh meals with your host family.
Sample activities: Visit a parmigiano cheese maker; take in a sotto il cielo di parma, an open airconcert in a local park; learn how balsamic vinegar is produced in Modena; spend a night at a fattoria didatica, a “teaching farm” making your own regional specialties; visit Europe’s oldest university in Bologna.
Sample host communities: Treviso, Asti
Gelato and Travel
Travel to Coriano on the Adriatic coast to satiate your sweet tooth and learn all about gelato and Italian desserts. For ten days, work side by side with an Italian ice-cream maker and chef to learn about the differences between industrial and artisan gelato. Experiment with different fresh ingredients, sample small pastries, and design your own flavor. During your stay, you will also visit Ravenna and the Republic of San Marino. Spend your final few days exploring the canals and markets of Venice.
