Student Essay
Each student has a unique and individual experience on their Experiment program. The following essay is a single glimpse into a program from one student's perspective.
Frina Lin -- Capturing Britain on Film (UKFD)
Twelve anxious faces, two leaders, an experiment--sounds like a chemistry lab, moments before an earth-shattering discovery is made. But this was no chemistry lab. This was a scene at the JFK International Airport, at the beginning of a journey that would be earth-shattering for fourteen eager individuals. Not chemical bonds, but bonds much stronger and more deeply rooted would be formed. By the end, a single string would tie us all together.
In most cases, people travel abroad to see famous sights, their travels a mere pleasure to the eyes. However, as a group, we were in England for a much different reason. As a part of the Experiment in International Living, we had traveled to experience the living and to interact with new people from this foreign country. This is why, when people ask if I went to Buckingham Palace, I answer with an honest no. People may then wonder what I did with all my time in London. Well, I walked around the city, learning to navigate the subway like a real Londoner. Instead of approaching the city bearing a huge map that basically screamed out, "Tourist! Tourist!," I talked to the Londoners and asked them for directions when I needed to get somewhere.
Anyone can see a picture of Big Ben or the London Eye at anytime and, to tell the truth, these sights are not much different in real life. However, with this once in a lifetime opportunity to explore London, I chose to do what can't be done through the internet, and can't be done anywhere in the world, except for in London.
I could certainly write pages and pages about my trip to the UK, but in this short reflection, the least I can do is make a point. On a trip like this, it's the people and the experiences you share with these people that you will remember forever. Our group of fourteen grew so close over the course of one month, and to this day, tied around the wrist of each of us is a single red string, string that was once connected, but was torn as we parted.
